Patrice (Pat) Cantin was born in Jonquière on November 27, 1978. Graduated in photography and painting from the CÉGEP de Jonquière, he studied Visual and Media Arts at the University of Quebec in Chicoutimi, then at the University of Quebec in Montreal, where he obtained his Bachelor's degree. He explores the inter-disciplinary aspect of painting and performance, and that of painting and music. His subsequent work will be clearly tinged.
Very young, Cantin remembers that he drew ... everywhere. "I drew: in my locker at school, my notebooks, my diaries, my skateboards." An object once drawn is no longer just an object but its creation. Cantin could have had a career as a graffiti artist, but his interests, many, led him elsewhere.
At age 17, Cantin began to paint. Six years later, he began a series of albums as a composer (archipel.cc). It is like DJ that he continues his artistic work on the Montreal scene (MUTEK, Picnik Électronik) for four years. The photography (woofshot.com) that he deepens since 2009, led him to paint again. Cantin does not identify with any particular current. He explores both abstraction and figurative in very contemporary works. His creative process is born in two stages. The idea of painting comes first of all from a composition and a color. Composition, especially for his abstract works, is often the sum of ideas accumulated over time. "I do not take notes. Forms, moods, colors, contrasts are superimposed in my head." Matter, for its part, often arises from previous work on the web. There may be several overlays at the beginning of a table. But it is the movement on this matter that conditions the continuation of the work whose result is never predetermined.
For Cantin, putting both hands in the material is a thrilling adventure, like something out of itself. "I like everything about creation. I touch everything. I have so many projects to realize, it is an obligation to get up in the morning: I have to create."
